Music has always been considered as a remedy for the roughness of the existence and a cure for some psychic desease. Its healhty effect on the human being without distinction of age, status or genre, as if its power started a pre- cultural and ontological dimension, and as if it was a gift given to men banish from Eden. The mythic figures who used or have suffered this power are countless: Apollo, doctor and inventor of music as well as father of Esculapio, god of medicine who repels evil from human beings; King Saul was detached from agony and sadness by the sound of David’s harp. The latter represents the archetype of the redeeming power of music in the Christian world, a power which the exorcists ‘ manuals reveal to be so pervading to chase away even the devil. The program perfomed by Umbra Lucis wants to prove the therapeutic purpose of music across a collection of pieces from different periods and contexts. Severeal will be the examples of Armenian music, which testify the deep integration of that music with the daily life, the religious aspect and with the effectiveness of a ritual dimension which has been orally preserved for centuries.
