Città di Castello – Park of Villa Montesca

Villa Montesca
Commissioned by the Barons Giulio and Leopoldo Franchetti and built starting from 1880, it was designed by the architect Boccini of Florence, the Montesca is the most sumptuous villa of the surroundings of Città di Castello.
Baron Leopoldo Franchetti, senator and philanthropist, one of the most important figures in the history of Città di Castello brought here his young wife Alice Hallgarten and together they were promoters of economic initiatives, education, welfare in favor of the farmers, women and, in general, the lower classes.
The villa, which belongs today to the Umbria Region, home for high-level specialization courses, with a European significance, renewing the natural teaching and educational vocation and of its founders.

Park of Villa Montesca
Realized together with the Villa in 1885, the park is unique in Umbria for the amount of plants and its botanical value. It houses exotic and Mediterranean species, which were introduced in the vast garden by Baron Franchetti as a result of his many trips, which are still present today and are the subject of interest by botanists and conservationists. The park is crossed by paths and trails that go through the various areas with a taste that recalls the English landscape park and nature. The vegetation is also typical of the nineteenth century. There are mostly conifers that give the characteristic structure of the park, in addition to many other curious, rare and impressive species.
